What should the DSL modem lights look like? (Mount Horeb & Blue Mounds)

These instructions are for Mount Horeb and Blue Mounds customers who have IPTV service with MHTC. For Dodgeville customers, please click here. For out-of-exchange customers, please click here.

No lights on the modem

  • Check to see if the modem is powered on by pushing the power button on the back of the modem and that the power cord is plugged in.
  • Check to see if the modem is getting power from the outlet by plugging the power cord into another outlet.
  • Check to see if the outlet is getting power by plugging something else into it. Did the outlet get tripped?

If the outlet is ok, but the modem still isn’t getting power, it could be a bad power supply. Contact MHTC Technical Support for further assistance.

  • The ADSL light should be solid green. If the ADSL light is out or flashing, is the telephone line plugged in securely to the Line port on the modem? Is the telephone line also plugged in securely at the wall jack? If your wall jack has an upper and lower port, typically the lower port is for DSL, unless otherwise labeled. If the telephone line is plugged in securely at both ends there could be a problem with the wiring, the telephone line or the modem. Try replacing the telephone line. If after doing all of the above you continue having problems please contact MHTC Technical Support.
  • The Internet light should be flashing green. If the Internet light is out, solid green, or red, is the ADSL light on the modem solid green? If not, see the steps above and then proceed. If the ADSL light is solid green verify that the network cable is plugged into the modem and the correct port on your computer or router. If the network cable is plugged in correctly make sure your network card is enabled on your computer. If the network card is enabled, try replacing the network cable or bypassing your router.

Note:If you have a Comtrend 5631 and you need to bypass your router to troubleshoot your connection, you will need to create a broadband connection on your computer. Contact MHTC Technical Support if you need assistance with creating a broadband connection.

  • The Power light should be solid green. If the Power light is out or flashing, the most likely cause is a failing modem or power supply. Mount Horeb, Blue Mounds and Verona customers should bring their modem, along with the power cord, to the Mount Horeb business office for testing. Please contact MHTC Technical Support before bringing your modem in to the office.
  • The ADSL Link light should be solid green. If the ADSL Link light is flashing, the most likely causes are a failing modem, telephone line cable came unplugged, or service interruption. Please verify the cables are all plugged in securely and then contact MHTC Technical Support for assistance in troubleshooting the modem.
  • The Internet light should be flashing green. If the Internet light is red, the modem could be failing or has lost its provisioning. If the Internet light is off, is the telephone line plugged in securely and is the ADSL Link light solid green? If the Internet light fails to turn green, please contact MHTC Technical Support for assistance in troubleshooting the modem.
  • The LAN Link light should be flashing green. If the LAN link light is off, is the network cable plugged into the correct port on your computer or router? If the network cable is plugged in correctly make sure your network card is enabled on your computer. If the network card is enabled, try replacing the network cable or bypassing your router.

Notes:

  • NEVER push the “reset” button on the Comtrend modem. Resetting the modem will wipe out all provisioning needed for connecting to our service. Power-cycling the modem is ok however. If you accidentally reset the modem, please contact MHTC Technical Support for assistance.
  • If you have video service on the same Comtrend modem as your Internet service, the network cable should be plugged into Lan 1x on the modem. If you only have Internet service on the modem, typically, a network cable can be plugged into any of the four ports (1x thru 4x).
  • The Comtrend 5621 modem can be used as a hard-wired router for up to four devices. The modem cannot be used as a wireless router.
  • The Comtrend 5621 modem is typically provisioned for PPPoE. Some customers choose to bridge the modem and put the PPPoE on the router due to having additional networking devices. Please contact MHTC Technical Support if you need assistance with this.
  • The Comtrend 5631 modem is always bridged, therefore, you will need a broadband connection on the pc or a router provisioned for PPPoE.
  • Routers are typicall set up with a DHCP or Dynamic Internet connection type using a dynamic IP address.
  • If you have problems connecting to the Internet and the lights on the modem are displaying properly, try the following:
    • Power off the modem and router and wait 2 minutes. Power on the modem and wait for it to synchronize (steady green ADSL or ADSL Link) then power on the router. Wait a couple minutes then try your connection again.
    • Bypass your router to see if it’s the router not making the connection to the modem. If you are able to get Internet without the router, try resetting the router or contact your router manufacturer for assistance. Remember to make your router secure again if you reset it and get it working properly. Comtrend 5631 customers should refer to the note under the Comtrend 5631 section.
